Summer at Raumaster: “Practical experience and developing my expertise”

The summer of 2023 was Alisa Lampela’s first summer at Raumaster. She will work at as an equipment designer in the summer of 2024 as well.

Rauma native Alisa Lampela studies mechanical engineering at LUT University in Lappeenranta. Lampela began her studies in 2020 and has since completed her bachelor’s degree. She continued to study for her master’s in the autumn of 2023 which means that she has a little less than two years of studies left.

The summer of 2023 was Lampela’s first summer at Raumaster. It was also the first time she worked in her own field.

– I was interested in equipment design. I have been thinking that I will further specialise in design during my master’s studies. At Raumaster, I got a good idea what the work will be like if I stay on the design path, Lampela explains her decision to apply to Raumaster.

"I heard about things that I had also already encountered in my studies. In that sense, my studies have created a good basis for this."

The company being Rauma-based also made the position more attractive. One of the reasons why Lampela found a summer in Rauma appealing is that the town is her family’s home.

Lampela explains that she gravitated towards mechanical engineering after she became interested in how different machines work.

– At school, we did a lot of design work, although most of it has been done in 3D rather than 2D, which was similar at Raumaster. At work, I heard about things that I had also already encountered in my studies. In that sense, my studies have created a good basis for this, Lampela explains.

More experienced colleagues helped and taught

Likewise, the work has given Lampela an advantage in her studies, especially if she decides to specialise in design in the master’s programme.

– During the summer, they basically gave me one of the project’s devices to work on. I modelled the new device on AutoCAD based on the primary data and models and created all necessary information and catalogues. For the most part it was fairly independent, but during the projects I collaborated with principal designers, project managers and equipment specialists. They gave me all the principal data, and if I had any questions later, I checked in with them.

"The spirit of the design department was great, I really loved it. The people at Raumaster are wonderful."

Among other things, Lampela praises the relaxed atmosphere and the low hierarchies of the design department – the more experienced colleagues were happy to answer any questions and help whenever it was needed.

– I enjoyed my work at Raumaster. The work itself was pretty relaxed, and I was able to work on my own. The spirit of the design department was great, I really loved it. The people at Raumaster are wonderful, Lampela says.
